In May 2020 an attempt was made to steal the the pit pony located on the A181 roundabout at Wheatley Hill. Thankfully the horse was recovered by a local resident. Due to the coronavirus pandemic work to repair the horse and have it re-sited had to be deferred.
Due to the considerable amount of damage to the horse the Parish Council contacted the Mid Durham Projects Group, who had originally supplied and installed the horse in 2012.
The Mid Durham Projects Group, now known as the Peoples Project agreed to provide a quotation for the restoration and re-siting of the horse.
The quotation received for the work was £2,300 which included the restoration of the pony, work to the secure it to the roundabout and all transport and labour.
Trimdon Foundry and Thornley Parish Councils were approached and asked if they would be willing to contribute towards the cost of the work. Trimdon Foundry Parish Council gave a very generous donation of £750 towards the costs.
Work has started on the repairs and it is hoped that very soon the pony will be back home.
